The US Senate has voted to overturn a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule that would give the watchdog oversight of tech giants, such as Apple, Google and X, that offer digital payment apps and wallets. Voting along party lines, the Senate backed a Congressional Review Act resolution introduced by Republicans Pete Ricketts and Mike Flood. It still needs to pass in the House of Representatives. Finalised late last year, the CFPB rule is designed to ensure that the big nonbank players follow federal law just like large banks, credit unions, and others already under its supervision.

A federal judge is ordering the Trump administration to keep the lights on at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with an injunction that maintains the regulator’s operations and workforce — at least for now.  “The Court cannot look away or the CFPB will be dissolved and dismantled completely in approximately 30 days,” Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said in a Friday decision announcing her preliminary injunction. For consumers, the ruling means the regulator has to ensure its hotline for consumer complaints and its database stay working, according to court documents and a consumer expert.

Process of shedding assets and draining bank reserves could collide with dynamics related to raising the federal debt limit. Federal Reserve officials made an adjustment on Wednesday to their policy of shrinking their $6.8 trillion in asset holdings. For the past three years, the Fed has been shrinking the portfolio of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities that it accumulated during previous stimulus campaigns, including one to stabilize dysfunctional markets when the Covid-19 pandemic upended commerce in 2020. Now, it will slow down the pace of that runoff.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against Visa over allegations of “monopolisation and other unlawful conduct in debit network markets in violation of Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act”. In a press release announcing the lawsuit on 24 September, the DOJ says: “Filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, the complaint alleges that Visa illegally maintains a monopoly over debit network markets by using its dominance to thwart the growth of its existing competitors and prevent others from developing new and innovative alternatives.”

The top five banks and thrifts with the largest portfolios of home equity loans had more than $94 million in loans combined for the third quarter of last year — more than half of the roughly $178 million amassed by the top 20 institutions. Discover Financial Services in Ridgewood, Illinois, posted the largest year-over-year change in total home equity loans, jumping from $3.9 million in the third quarter of 2023, to $6.1 million the following year. Other organizations with similar improvements include Third Federal Savings and Loan Association of Cleveland in Ohio with a 28% rise and First Citizens BancShares in Raleigh, North Carolina, with just over 22%.

Investing.com -- The Federal Reserve may need to implement more aggressive rate cuts as recent data reveals a concerning trend in the labor market, according to Citi analysts in a note Wednesday. The bank said the percentage of individuals finding "jobs hard to get" is increasing, signaling that the rise in unemployment is not merely a sign of a growing labor supply but an indication of weak hiring conditions.  Citi notes that this trend, observed in the Conference Board survey, is reminiscent of the conditions in September 2001, a period when the U.S. economy was already in recession. This situation suggests that a “hard landing” could be imminent, making further aggressive rate cuts from the Fed more likely, says the bank.

The regulator closed Aldersgate Federal Credit Union and Butler Heritage FCU; Aldersgate was placed in conservatorship last month after operating in an “unsafe and unsound manner.” The National Credit Union Administration said Tuesday it has liquidated Marion, Illinois-based Aldersgate Federal Credit Union, which was placed into conservatorship last month. On Monday, the NCUA liquidated Middletown, Ohio-based Butler Heritage Federal Credit Union after its in-state peer, Cincinnati Ohio Police Federal Credit Union, acquired some of its assets and assumed Butler Heritage’s share accounts. Butler Heritage was placed into conservatorship in January.

JPMorgan Chase said that the fintech middlemen that have helped a new generation of financial apps connect with traditional checking accounts are flooding the bank’s systems with unnecessary data requests. Of 1.89 billion data requests from middlemen hitting its systems in June, only 13% were initiated by a customer for transactions, according to an internal JPMorgan memo seen by CNBC. Huntington Bank will acquire Texas- and Mississippi-based Cadence Bank in a $7.4 billion, all-stock transaction that’s expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, the banks said Monday. It’s the second Texas-related acquisition this year for $223 billion-asset Huntington. The Columbus, Ohio-based regional acquired Dallas-based Veritex Community Bank for $1.9 billion; that deal closed last week.  Cadence, which has $53 billion in assets, has dual headquarters in Houston and Tupelo, Mississippi. The bank has about 390 branches and 1 million customers across Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri and Tennessee.
