Kiting refers to the illegal practice of intentionally inflating the balances of bank accounts by taking advantage of the time it takes for checks to clear between different banks. It involves creating artificial balances by transferring funds between accounts at different banks and taking advantage of the delay in check processing to create the appearance of available funds.
